Egg Freezing Process – How Does It Work?

So you’re thinking about egg freezing! Most likely you’re making the right decision. Egg freezing is the process of stimulating your ovaries to release eggs and retrieving them for storage (OOCYTE CRYOPRESERVATION). Eggs can be stored for unlimited time without compromising their quality. Here’s a breakdown of the process as of 2022:

Total time: 15 days+
Total cost: $10,000
1) Initial Consultation
Your OB doctor will go over treatment plan, cost, and success rate with you. It should take only 30 minutes.

2) Ultrasound & Blood tests
Once you’re off birth control for a few months, you’re ready for Ultrasound (to check your egg reserve) & Blood tests (to check your hormones levels). This helps your doctor develop customized medication dosage.

3) Cycle Starts
The entire cycle takes 14-15 days, from the first day of your period. You’ll have to inject yourself every night at home with egg stimulation medications. You’ll also report to the doctor every other day for blood test and/or ultrasound.

4) Egg Retrieval
Once your eggs are mature, you’ll undergo egg retrieval procedure. You’ll be put under anaesthesia for 30 minutes while your doctor retrieves your eggs. You’ll be able to go home immediately after that, and recovery should take 1-2 days. The eggs will be frozen in liquid nitrogen, and the storage cost is around $600/year.

Overall it’s pretty straightforward! If you wonder about the cost and other FAQs, make sure to check out this post.
